A star visiting

Last week the research vessel Polarstern of the Alfred Wegener Institut made a brief visit to Longyearbyen. We asked one of the tenderboats if they'd let us take look inside. It resulted in an almost two hour tour guided by the expedition leader himself. Thomas whose job seems to be quite intense and stressful usually had all the time in the world since some of his scientists were delayed.

We started our tour on the bridge and went down through the cabins for scientists and crew, the cantinas, the bar, a lot of laboratories and so on. He showed and explained us heaps of scientific equipment to us and answered all our questions. The Polarstern is definitely a fascinating ship even though it is an old lady being more than 30 years old. It has everything to make little and big kids wanting to become scientists: Robots, Laboratories, Helicopters, Cranes...

Tonight I will visit another ship. Greenpeace "Arctic Sunrise" is back in town and they will host an OPEN BOATS so within the next days you'll hopefully see another post about that.
